Stair Tread Repair β€” Uptown Dallas TX

The Problem

Uptown Dallas homeowner had a stair tread that had been giving them trouble for a while β€” cracked through on one side, squeaking badly, and had started shifting slightly underfoot when you stepped on it. Not catastrophic, but a cracked, moving stair tread is a safety issue and it only gets worse the longer it's left. They'd been stepping around it for months. Time to fix it.

What We Found

Took a look at it before doing anything. The tread itself had a clean crack running across the width β€” looked like it had been weakened over time and finally gave under repeated use. The fasteners holding it to the stringer had also worked loose, which is why it was shifting. The riser below it was still solid. This was a tread replacement, not a full stair rebuild.

What We Did

  • Carefully removed the damaged tread β€” worked it off without damaging the risers or the stringers on either side. A tread that's been in place for years can be stubborn to remove cleanly
  • Inspected the stringers and riser underneath β€” confirmed the structure was solid before putting anything new on top. No point replacing a tread if the framing underneath has issues
  • Cut the new tread to match β€” matched the width, depth and nose profile of the existing treads so the staircase looked consistent top to bottom
  • Pre-drilled to prevent splitting β€” hardwood treads will split if you drive fasteners without pre-drilling, especially close to the edges
  • Secured the new tread properly β€” glued and fastened to the stringers, no flex, no movement
  • Set and filled the fastener holes β€” countersunk, filled and sanded flush so the surface was smooth
  • Matched the stain as close as possible β€” existing treads had a medium walnut stain on them. We got close enough that you had to look hard to see which one was new
  • Tested it under full weight before leaving β€” stepped on it hard from different positions, no movement, no squeak

Why a Cracked Stair Tread Isn't Something to Put Off

A stair tread that's cracked and moving underfoot is a slip and fall waiting to happen, especially in a home with kids, older family members, or pets. Stairs take thousands of impacts a year and a compromised tread gets worse fast. What starts as a crack and a squeak can turn into a tread that fully gives way under load. It's one of those repairs where the cost of waiting is a whole lot higher than the cost of fixing it.

Squeaky Stairs? Doesn't Always Mean a Full Replacement

Most stair squeaks come from the tread rubbing against the riser or the stringer as it flexes β€” usually because the original fasteners have worked loose over time. In a lot of cases, adding screws from above or construction adhesive from below stops the squeak without replacing anything. If the tread itself is cracked or damaged though, replacement is the right call. We can take a look and tell you which one you're dealing with.

How It Turned Out

New tread in, solid underfoot, stain blended well with the existing stairs. No squeak, no shift, no crack. The homeowner said they'd forgotten what it felt like to walk up the stairs without stepping around that spot. Job done right, same day.
